Company Registration questions

How much does it cost to register a company in South Africa?

CIPC charges R50 for a name reservation and R125 for a company registration with a standard MOI. Our R920 fee includes those CIPC fees, VAT, the SARS income tax number and all the paperwork.

Can a foreigner register a company in South Africa?

Yes. Foreign nationals can be directors and shareholders of a South African Pty Ltd. We need certified passport copies and, for banking, some banks ask for proof of a valid visa.

Can I register a company without a name?

Yes. CIPC can register the company under its registration number as the name. You can reserve and change to a proper name later with our company name change service.

Do I need an accountant once the company is registered?

Every company must file an annual return with CIPC, keep accounting records and submit income tax returns to SARS, even if it has not traded. Our monthly package covers all of it for 1% of business turnover, with a R79 minimum.

What is the difference between a Pty Ltd and a sole proprietor?

A Pty Ltd is a separate legal person: it protects your personal assets, is taxed at the company rate and can have shareholders. A sole proprietor trades in their own name with no separation. Most businesses that sign contracts, employ staff or tender should be a Pty Ltd.
