Typical small-business fees in South Africa are quoted by the hour or as separate retainers for bookkeeping, tax and payroll, with year-end billed on top. Here is what changes, and where the saving comes from, when you move to One Percent Accounting.
| Traditional firm | One Percent Accounting | |
|---|---|---|
| How you are billed | Hourly rates plus separate retainers for bookkeeping, tax and payroll | One fee: 1% of monthly business turnover, everything included |
| Year-end | Separate invoice for annual financial statements and the tax return | Included |
| Quiet months | Same retainer regardless of trade | Fee drops with business turnover |
| Who does the work | Often outsourced or junior staff, practitioner signs off | Xero Gold Partner accountants and SARS-registered practitioners on one team |
| Software | Desktop or firm-owned files | Xero, owned by you, live 24/7 |
| Once-off registrations | Quoted per request | Fixed prices in the online tax store |
Not running a business? The personal income tax membership covers your annual ITR12 and year-round tax support for R454.25 a year including VAT. Company registrations, tax compliance PINs, VAT and PAYE registrations, CIPC annual returns and more are sold at fixed prices in the tax store, with CIPC fees included where stated.
No. The 1% is calculated on your business's monthly turnover excluding VAT, and 15% VAT is then added to our fee.
From your reconciled Xero books. The fee is calculated on the previous month's sales and collected by debit order on the date you choose in your service level agreement.
The service level agreement runs month to month with one calendar month's notice. There is no lock-in and your Xero organisation stays yours.
The monthly Xero subscription, COIDA assessments, CIPC annual return fees and submissions, payroll beyond 10 employees (billed ad hoc per additional employee), independent reviews or audits, and catch-up work on books that are behind when you join. All of these are quoted up front.
It depends on what you pay now. Add up your bookkeeper, tax practitioner, payroll and year-end fees for a month, enter the total in the calculator above, and it shows your saving in rand. Because everything is included in the 1% fee, most of the saving comes from no longer paying separate retainers, hourly rates and an annual financial statements invoice.
No setup fee for businesses whose books are up to date. Conversions from another system and catch-up bookkeeping are quoted once-off before you commit.
